Department Description

Biosystems Research & Development Department, located in Livermore, California, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy. We are an interdisciplinary research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research. Our goal is to address problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and health security, through advanced technology development and new research approaches. For example, we are one of the world-leaders in application of microfluidic technology for biochemical analysis. The department is highly multidisciplinary and is comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical and physical) and engineering (chemical, mechanical and bioengineering). Currently, we have ongoing projects in the areas of medical diagnostics, therapeutics screening, algal biofuels as well as basic research studies in immunology, cellular signaling, protein structure/function determination, proteomics, computational biology and microfluidics.

Job Summary

Applies integrated technical judgment--which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses--to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions. Roots the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles. Creates and applies scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. Uses physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia?s science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration.

Conducts exploratory research to produce new knowledge in chemistry. Conceives, organizes, promotes, and executes ideas and plans to increase chemistry's contribution to Sandia's mission and create chemical approaches to meet exploratory objectives. Conducts research involving the design, development, and evaluation of new analytical instruments to exploit chemical parameters for advanced information extraction from physical and chemical systems. Provides chemical process analysis of larger processes or systems.

Primary Job Duties

We are seeking a Senior Member of the Technical Staff to perform research in carbohydrate/organic chemistry applicable to bioenergy research. The individual will work in a multidisciplinary team involving chemists, biologists and engineers to develop carbohydrate substrates and arrays for screening for screening of enzymes involved in biomass conversion. Responsibilities will include developing enzyme assays; methods for modification, labeling and immobilization of proteins and carbohydrates; and adapting these methods to high-throughput array-based platforms.

Required

Ph.D. in organic chemistry or a related field with 3+ years of postdoctoral experience is required. Extensive experience in carbohydrate synthesis, purification and characterization pertinent to biofuels R&D demonstrated by scientific publications and presentations is a must. Person should also have considerable hands-on experience with mass spectrometry, chromatography, fluorescence spectroscopy and NMR.

Desired

Experience with enzyme (glycosyltransferases and glycosyl hydrolases) assays and kinetics; protein chemistry; and biomass characterization.

Security Clearance

No clearance required.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.

Benefits

At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.
